Germany Ready to Sell Eurofighter Typhoon to Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia's order for 48 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets from Britain was stuck in Germany's embargo. The German Government, which received reactions from both the Eurofighter Consortium member countries and its own defense and aviation sector, took a step back in its embargo decision.
Regarding the issue, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in a statement recently: "We are ready to sell more Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia." statements were included.
Eurofighter Consortium members England, Spain and Italy reacted to Germany due to the embargo against Saudi Arabia. England had even unofficially expressed the option of Germany being bypassed from the program in the said sale. Airbus employees in Germany had protested at the factory on the grounds that this decision of the German government put sales and therefore employment at risk.
The Saudi Arabian Air Force currently has 71 Typhoon fighter jets. Saudi Arabia had also started negotiations with France to supply Rafale fighter jets in response to the Typhoon embargo.
On the other hand, Germany continues to oppose the sale of 40 Eurofighter Typhoons, which Turkey plans to procure from England.
According to current plans; Eurofighter Typhoon production in Germany will end in 2030 with the delivery of the last Tranche 4 aircraft (Quadriga contract, 38 fighters) to the Luftwaffe (German Air Force). There is currently a ten-year gap without orders for the German military aviation industry, as the first entry-level operational capability declaration of the next-generation SCAF/FCAS fighter developed in conjunction with France and Spain is planned for 2040 at the earliest.
If the German Ministry of Defense does not place a new order (i.e. the Tranche 5) soon, Airbus fears the end of military fighter construction in Germany, major job losses and a general decline of the aviation industry. Airbus is therefore calling for a vital (and urgent) decision on the Eurofighter.
In this gap, Saudi Arabia and Turkey's order of 88 aircraft in total plays a 'savior' role. Germany is expected to change its perspective on Turkey's Typhoon supply.
