Glider flight from Sion to Saanen, Switzerland. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024
Take off from Sion airport and landing at Saanen airport, South West Switzerland.
The tow plane pulled the glider until 1338 meter (~ 4,400 feet) altitude, then it was up to me to find ascending air! For that, it is necessary to fly close to mountains to get the climbing air pushed up by the terrain. Flying close to mountains can be tricky: turbulence and downdraft require quick action if one wants to avoid an early grave. So, KEEP PAYING ATTENTION!
In fact, there was so much ascending air that I could have flown for hours and hours, even a little after sunset. I reached over 11,300 feet AMSL (watch from 25:15). NO OXYGEN NEEDED: I have flown in REAL LIFE in small aircraft at ~ 14,000 feet without any oxygen and never had any problem! While in the UK it is recommended over 10,000 feet, I have never heard this in Switzerland...
So, it was easy to reach Saanen to land: I just needed to dive and use the airbrake generously. After touch down, I managed to reach a nice spot to park the aircraft without any help whatsoever! šŖ
NB: the water ballast was at 50% so I landed keeping the water, to see how the aircraft behaved: no problem. Also, I wanted to land AND also then park the aircraft on the apron, so I needed more weight to have more inertia to roll for long enough to reach the apron: no engine to do that on this glider!
