To make this easier try going into the system settings on your PS4 or PS5, and then choose the "accessibility" option. Once there, go down to the "button assignments" option and select it, then "enable custom button assignments". Once enabled, another option will pop up that will let you swap buttons. Go in there and swap out the X button with either R1 or R2. This way you can sprint by clicking L3, control the camera with the right analog stick, and spam R1 or R2 to pick up the materia. Just don't forget to swap those buttons back afterwards. Hope this helps.
