"Saving lives faster and more safely."
Having a good ambulance can make the difference between life or death. From the 1950s, Toyota has produced ambulances made from specially outfitted passenger and commercial vehicles. The latest of these is the third-generation "Himedic" high-standard ambulance.
The body is based on the 200 Series HiAce Super Long that was outfitted by Toyota's race car development and customization team, Toyota Customizing & Development. Propelling the 220.5 inches long, 74.6 inches wide, 98.0 inches tall body is the 2TR-FE, a 2.7-liter inline-4 gasoline engine. The front and rear of the vehicle are fitted with an all-LED array of red warning lights.
The interior was designed with the utmost functionality in a lifesaving situation. In the patient area, the high roof of the HiAce was raised even further to secure 72.8 inches of vertical space, and for the first time on an ambulance of this type, it has sliding doors on both sides. Space in the patient area has also been improved over the previous model by the strategic relocation of specialized equipment such as the hand wash basin.
The third-generation Himedic received regular updates, making sure it is always up to date. In 2009, the seat layout was rearranged to increase space. In 2013, the gauges were replaced by a multifunction display as standard equipment, allowing the operators to track data such as average fuel consumption and atmospheric temperature. Also, from 2020, the Himedic came with the Toyota Safety Sense, a preventative safety package, as standard equipment, and the 4-speed automatic transmission was upgraded to a 6-speed unit.
In November 2020, production of the Himedic reached 10,000 units, making it one of lifesaving vehicles in Japan.
