Granite by Sleep Token Custom Full Band FC #688
I saw in real time the discussion of Sleep Token go from "woah who the heck are these guys, this is awesome" to "this is the most overrated band in history" over the past two years. And I can kinda see why. Chokehold and The Summoning basically multipled their fandom by 10x when those singles dropped, and Take Me Back to Eden became one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year.
And then we got the album... and boy, was it divisive. We had a random Sputnikmusic staffer saying "tiktok band releases new low for depressive horny muzak in the guise of pretentious concept metal. piss on it repeatedly". Not to mention Fantano's super low score. But then they got more positive recognition, like II getting the award for best drummer of 2023 from Drumeo, and Take Me Back to Eden landing at the top of multiple lists for best album of the year. Clearly we haven't reached a consensus on this album, and we never will.
So what do I think about the album? I still enjoy it a lot. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure now, I'd admit. It was my most streamed album of 2023, and while I'm not playing it endlessly anymore, I still enjoy coming back to most songs. Even the songs I didn't really care for my first few listens. Like. The Apparition is the most underrated song on the album by a mile, and not enough people in the fandom talk about it.
It's a shame I 100% won't get to hear it when I see Sleep Token tonight. Their setlist has pretty much stayed the same since coming to North America, and The Apparition has yet to make a live debut. But I'll still get to hear Chokehold! And The Summoning! And Ascensionism! And the title track! And Euclid!!! It's gonna be a good night.
