Grieg's Lyric Pieces are an incredible collection of miniatures for solo piano, and this closing composition in his third book of such pieces is nothing short of magical. Many of the Lyric Pieces follow a standard A-B-A format, but To the Spring manages to use the format to build upon its beginning theme and tell a story in the process. You can basically hear the siren call of the beautiful spring at the start, which inspires the traveler to endure a harrowing journey (the B section) to find it. The reintroduction of the theme at the end, presumably to represent the long-awaited arrival at the spring, introduces a third voice and switches the hand playing the melody, ultimately climaxing in a beautiful series of chords and ending in a series of purely blissful moments.
