Strategic Mind: The Pacific is a turn-based WW2 strategy game developed by the Ukrainian studio Starni Games and published in 2019.

The Strategic Mind game series is based on the good old Panzer General concept and adds modern game mechanics, graphics and effects plus a historical narrative and a number of other features. A very promising concept indeed!

Strategic Mind: The Pacific is based on the military conflict between Imperial Japan and the USA raging in the Pacific region from 1941 to 1945.

Players represent either a US or a Japanese admiral and control a good number of naval, air and later also ground troops.

Strategic Mind: The Pacific offers scenarios based on real historic events. It is a successor to the classic and highly renown Panzer General series (which was first published in 1994 by SSI) and is - when looked at the core game mechanics - relatively similar, but also contains many new features:
Units can be equipped with special items or upgrades ranging from mortars for infantry, incendiary ammunition for artillery, camouflage painting for your ships or better optics for your submarines. Units gain experience and can choose different abilities when gaining levels. There are even a number of heroes based on real historic personalities that can be assigned to certain units. The game contains a narrative and many cut-scenes which add to the atmosphere.

The game is being played on a hex-field map. It can be described as a more complicated (and more interesting) variant of chess.
The game sports a great variety of units like different types of infantry, artillery, tanks, anti-air or anti-tank, cavalry, fighter planes, tactical bombers, strategic bombers. A focus is also on naval units like battleships, cruisers, destroyers, carriers and submarines. Many of these are historically accurate WW2 models.

In the game the player must not only be successful in the missions as an admiral but also see to accumulate prestige. With prestige you pay for new units, replacements and technological upgrades.

The game includes also a logistical layer. There are supply points that have to be under control in order to supply the troops at the front with much needed fuel and ammunition.
As with most games in this genre the whole political dimension of WW2 and the commited crimes by most factions involved are not the primary focus. So reading and thinking about the topic on your own is advised. The game wants to do more in this regard than others though and adresses many issues in the cutscenes. I personally like this very much and consider the Strategic Mind series a great leap into the right direction for good and interesting historic games.
