Handheld Horror Retrospective (Part 1)
Handheld Horror Games are pretty rare to find on earlier systems like the Gameboy, Gamegear and beyond. For a genre that depends a lot on audio and visual quality, can 8 and 16bit systems with a tiny screen have terrifying experiences to rival home consoles?
In the first part of this Handheld Horror Retrospective we take a look at 3 games that achieved horror on a system that wasn't designed for it. Whether good or bad, these games do something unique in their quest for a handheld horror experience.
Consoles like the Gameboy are near and dear to many people's hearts though, and with a modern understanding of horror and lots of examples of 2D horror, indie developers are also creating great new games in their style, becoming the final form of 8bit Handheld Horror.
The three games covered here are Innsmouth no Yakata on the Virtual Boy, Alone in the Dark on the Gameboy Color and Clock Tower on the Wonderswan.
Thanks for watching, and take it easy breezy!
