Isabela Merced, who starred in The Last of Us, explains why it was crucial to depart from the original. On May 4, "Scars"? the fourth episode of season two of The Last of Us?. Bella Ramsey, Pedro Pascal, Gabriel Luna, and Rutina Wesley from season 1 return, but new actors Kaitlyn Dever, Merced, Young Mazino, and Catherine O'Hara are also featured. Merced portrays Dina, a Jackson resident who is Ellie's age. In an attempt to overthrow Abby, Ellie and Dina are traveling to Seattle together as of episode 4.
Merced talks about a modification to the game. The way Dina learns that Ellie is immune is altered in episode 4 of season 2 of The Last of Us. Merced praises the show's strategy and calls the reveal "more of an intense sequence." As Merced perceives it in the game, Dina "doesn't really get to fully process it."
Dina is kept in the dark about Ellie's immunity to the Cordyceps virus in both the game and the show. As seen in season 2, Ellie has self-inflicted burns and gotten a tattoo to hide the scars from her bites. When Ellie's mask breaks during the infected subway attack sequence in the game, Dina learns of her immunity. Ellie is not affected by the virus in the game, even though airborne spores have not been introduced in the show.
The scene had to be altered because the airborne infection hasn't been introduced into The Last of Us season 2 yet. Infected people chase after Ellie and Dina as they run through a turnstile before reaching safety. Ellie raises her arm to prevent Dina from being bitten as an infected comes toward her. She has saved Dina by preventing Ellie from getting bitten in her place, but she threatens Ellie with a gun because she believes Ellie is going to turn. Ellie shares her secret once they are safe.
Dina's character in The Last of Us season 2 has undergone a number of changes from the original game, including revealing her relationship with Joel and having her attend his funeral. Many of these adjustments ultimately give Dina greater emotional weight, which strengthens the impact of her and Ellie's journey. It will be interesting to see what additional changes The Last of Us season 2 makes from the game as it premieres its final three episodes.
