http://MrMegaManFan.tumblr.com/ I made it a personal goal to reach the 2,000 mark using only daily free plays either given away by the Bunny (Nintendo) or earned using the once-a-day practice play badge catcher, all before Nintendo shuttered the service and stopped releasing new badges this week. I'm happy to say I met that goal and that 97% of my badges are from free plays! My only major expenditure was to get 100% of the Mega Man badges the week they were released.
