The brass model trains released in small quantities by the Toby company in Japan and imported by Pacific Fast Mail in the 1950s and 1960's are legendary for their hand-built construction quality, high level of detail and prototype accuracy. In an age when everything is mass-produced by computer-guided laser-machines, this remarkable brass model from over 50-years ago has been enhanced with several skillfully soldered brass detail castings and is an exceptional stand-out.
The model is in excellent condition. Among the notable original features are removable smoke lifters, a delicate swing-out coupler on the pilot and cast boiler-front number plate which reads 'Union Pacific 823' (which was an FEF-2 class 'Northern)
The United/Toby emblem is affixed to the retainer plate on the under-frame. A number '9' (maybe '6') is also stamped into the plate. 'JAPAN' is printed...rather than stamped into the plate.
There are a couple of details which I am quite sure have been added later: The MARS light casting over the headlight, the Worthington SA feedwater casting behind the number boards, the power reverse mechanism and the Pyle generator. These skillfully soldered brass details are typical of appliances on the FEF-2's and FEF-3 Northern's.
The model runs with notable, but characteristic gear noise. It has been idle for many years and will benefit from basic servicing if it is to be run. There is some very mild wheel wear, typical of test running. The model has a uniform patina of tarnish. All soldering appears to be strong, straight and clean.
The original green box is provided. There are several areas on the box which show wear, but no tears or breaks. The interior of the box has its original two compartments and the cut hardwood stripes which secured the loco and tender in place, but the original padded paper material has been replaced. Additional packing material will be used to secure the model and insure safe delivery.
