Mechanical engineer Rob Bell shows us how hovercrafts work with these directions for how to make your own. He also tests his own model out on water. Subscribe: http://bit.ly/SubscribeToEarthLab

IMPORTANT: You will need one sober adult with a sense of scientific wonder as this experiment will involve burning things, and we don't want anyone getting hurt.

Live Experiments (Ep 8): What you need to get started is: a CD, a sports drink cap, a balloon and some glue.

1. Glue the sports drink cap onto the CD so that it covers the hole in the middle.
2. Leave to dry.
3. Then blow up the balloon and carefully place it over the sports drink cap, while the cap is CLOSED. Try not to let any air out of the balloon.
4. When you're ready, open the drinks cap and give the CD a push and see what happens!

Please note that your home made hovercraft needs a smooth surface to work, so try it on your kitchen or dining room table.
