Dark Souls and FromSoftware titles have influenced so much of the action game landscape that video games that aren’t even souls-likes end up adopting the parrying, dodge, rolls, and bonfires that the genre is known for. Dark moody video games lacking personality. A focus on bein hard instead of being fun. And action games nowadays don’t have much panache. But En Garde! by Fireplace Games bucks that trend and makes soulslikes fun again. Well action games, anyway. En Garde isn’t a souls-like but the inspiration from Sekiro is definitely there. That and classic swashbuckling flicks like Zorro or The Princess Bride. So let me tell you about En Garde! and why En Garde might be changing the action video game genre and the soulslike genre too.
