Tutorial on how to apply Liquid Ultra thermal compound, unlike thermal pastes, you can't just put a small drop in the middle and then squash the cooler on top, because liquid ultra does not expand the way thermal paste does, you must spread it over CPU in a very thin and even layer.

I might have not done it perfectly, but it's very well done and this is how it should look like. The smoother and thinner you get it, the better.

Whole point of thermal compound, is that CPU and Cooler surfaces are not smooth on microscopic levels, to your eye they might look very smooth, but when you put a cooler onto CPU without any thermal compound, then there will be lot of air in between, thermal compound is made to replace air in between cooler and CPU and conduct heat from CPU to cooler.
