How to Clear the Display Cache in Windows 10 [Tutorial]

Windows 10 keeps track of any displays you have in the Windows Display Cache. If you're having problems with your output display clearing the display cache may help. Here's how.

The display cache in Windows 10 helps the computer to remember what mode and resolution to use when a particular display output is detected from a connected external monitor. This helps avoid having to manually apply all the settings again each time a specific external monitor is connected.

Sometimes the cache may have issues, and you find that the display output is not working properly when you connect to an external monitor.

If this happens, you can reset and clear the display cache to see if that fixes the issue. When you reset and clear the display cache, it will force Windows 10 to forget any connected external monitors and their individual settings stored in the display cache on the computer. The next time you connect to an external display, it will be treated as a newly connected display using the default and optimal settings again.

This tutorial will show you how to clear and reset the external display cache in Windows 10.

Currently, Windows 10 does not have any setting do clear the display cache, so we need to delete a few registry entries. Be sure to back up your registry before proceeding.

By deleting a few registry keys, Windows 10 will forget any previously connected monitors by removing their data. After you reboot, Windows 10 will redetect any connected monitors.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10 operating system (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education) from all supported hardware manufactures, like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba,Lenovo, and Samsung).
