I threw a mealworm into my weaver ant territory. And yes, caterpillars or even grubs like the meal worm have no real offensive weapons BUT they are basically long tubes full of muscle so they actually do present a real danger to the individual workers as they thrash around violently when attacked.
That being said, this mealworm is already dead. I don't really think it's good to throw something alive into a place full of ants as it seems like a torturous way to die so I prekilled this one and it's movements are merely it's nerves reacting to the ants. It's already in mealworm heaven.
The ants probably got the mealworm's scent on some of them and in the confusion there was a bit of friendly fire towards the end. Weaver ants love grabbing things and pulling so a few of them got caught up grabbing each other. And although they are reluctant to let anything go once they have them in their mandibles they did eventually all release each other and it looks like no workers were seriously harmed in the battle.
