Evolution will naturally happen, but this is a very slow and painful process so I "nudge" it along periodically because I want results. This is mostly done through radiation. I get so efficient at evolution that creatures can potentially even evolve in real time. This is at the expense of the creatures health and well being, but that's why I have thousands of them. Plus the breed very quickly and as long as they're doing that faster than they're dying then it works out. By the end we had so many unique species that I don't think breeding was even possible anymore and the world was doomed. Success.
