Itsuki no Komoriuta (Lullaby of the Itsuki Region) Shinobue Flute 3 hon choshi #shorts #shinobue
20This beautiful but sad melody I played with my shinobue flute 3 hon choshi, carries a dark past of Japan. Itsuki no Komori Uta, a Lullaby of the Itsuki region (Kumamoto prefecture), was not a sweet lullaby sung by baby's moms. It was sung by young girls sent away by their families to serve wealthy families as nannies. They were sent away so that the families had "less mouths to feed". They were only 10-13 years old. It seems this was common in Kumamoto during the Kamakura period (1185-1133). This custom was not unique to Kumamoto since there is another lullaby, Lullaby of the Takeda Region, born in the same situation in the Takeda region (Kyoto).
Can you imagine if you are a girl living in that era, you grow up afraid that one day, your family will pull you aside and tell you that you need to go away and live somewhere you don't know and work day and night to babysit some rich kids and get treated as a servant girl from a poor family? Would you be willing to sacrifice when you are 10 years old to save your family?
Why only girls and not boys? What about child labor laws? Who could the girls trust in the world if their own families would kick them out of their homes? What kind of trauma would they have to endure?
