Look at Jon Stewart, who will be talking with me for the closing event of this year’s New Yorker Festival, on Sunday evening. (You can buy tickets here.) As a standup comedian with pretty extensive experience in television, Jon, along with his writers and fellow-performers, gave us, from 1999 to 2015, an era-defining program on Comedy Central: “The Daily Show.” Every night, he and the likes of John Oliver, Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, Steve Carell, Wyatt Cenac, Aasif Mandvi, and Jessica Williams trained their sights on the news and reinvented political humor. Stewart hardly concealed his left-leaning politics, but his targets ranged widely. And, as an interviewer, he came through with the question that you wanted asked. When John McCain shifted to full pander mode in an attempt to win over the far right, in 2006, Stewart asked him, “Are you going into crazy-base world?” “I’m afraid so,” McCain admitted.
