The game is a spin-off of the Gears of War series and a prequel to the entire franchise. It follows Damon Baird, Augustus Cole, and their squad Kilo as they are put on trial for disobeying orders. The main campaign is divided into six chapters, each with several missions.
In the game, a horrific subterranean species called the Locust have emerged from the ground of planet Sera and are waging war against mankind. In the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day, the fate of the world rests on the shoulders of a young Lieutenant, Damon Baird, and his team – Kilo Squad.
