Karate Champ (Nintendo NES) - Gameplay
Karate Champ is an early fighting game for the NES. Unlike most games of its genre, Karate Champ is more like a tournament simulation than an actual fight. Each round ends when you hit the opponent, which nets you half a point. The match is over when a player reaches 4 points. There's no life bar, either, it's all about the points.
Controls are also a little unusual, but make a lot of sense when you get the hang of it: A strikes forward, B strikes backward. This allows for an interesting combination of combos, such as punching forward, the opponent jumps over you, and you kick backwards as he lands. It's actually pretty exciting! I had a great time playing this game.
