QUOTES/NOTES/TOPICS:
• Steve Kerr pregame Pelicans on GP2 being listed as questionable: “should be good to go… will play tonight.” (Dalton Johnson, 95.7 The Game)
• On Andrew Wiggins: Still no timetable, but he is "working out every day" on his own right now, but team wouldn’t know about his game conditioning until he got back in building. 20th straight missed game tonight. Kerr added that Wiggins’ absence remains indefinite but idea of shutting him down “hasn’t been discussed… Once he's back, our training staff will get with him and see where he is (physically)… There's hope” he returns. (Dalton Johnson, Anthony Slater, Kerith Burke)
ON JONATHAN KUMINGA’S GAME THIS MONTH:
“I think JK’s been really good. It’s just fun to see him continue to make strides, and to see the pictures and recognize the patterns that are in front of him. He’s doing things that he wasn’t doing a few months ago, flashing to the middle of the paint, or diving and catching, and looking for the role man, or the dive man, all these little things on tape are jumping out. As a result, I think the game is becoming easier for him, and more comfortable and I think that’s one of the reasons he’s shooting better.”
ON HOW HE COACHES SHOT SELECTION:
“It’s more of a plea than anything. With our team, we’re constantly looking for that balance between being fast and free, and being disciplined. It’s really just a reminder, if I see a couple bad shots, especially early in the clock when someone else is open, I’ll just mention it during a timeout, and the idea is you want to make the defense move. You want to make them have to make multiple rotations, because they’re going to be more likely to make a mistake. If you keep bailing a team out with challenged jump shots, two-point jump shots early in the shot clock you’re letting a team off the hook, and that’s the kind of thing I’ll remind our team during a timeout, or in a film session or whatever.”
ON DIFFERENT SHOOTING EXPECTATIONS FOR STEPHEN CURRY AND KLAY THOMPSON:
“Yeah, for sure. I mean, Steph and Klay have earned a certain amount of rope, because of what they’re capable of you don’t ever want to take that away from them, and young guys have to earn that a little bit more. It’s sort of our philosophy as a team. We want guys to be confident. I don’t want anybody to be thinking about the coach breathing down their neck about bad shot, bad shot, bad shot. I always err on the side of freedom, but try to reign things in if they’re getting out of control.”
ON DONTE DIVINCENZO’S SHOOTING:
“I don’t think it’s a huge sample size. He’s had a great year shooting the three. He’s played so well for us. I think the last game was a little different, just with Gary (Payton II) back, the minutes were down, so it’s going to take a little bit of an adjustment for Donte with his role, but we’ve talked about it and I still want him to be aggressive looking for that shot.”
ON TY JEROME’S STATUS:
“He knows he’s got three (games of eligibility left on his Two-Way contract) left. We have six left. If Steph or Jordan (Poole) were to miss a game, then we need him. So, I don’t want to use those three games up now and then all of a sudden one of those two guys is hurt over the last three. So, we’ll just save the games and if we have, knock on wood nobody is injured over the next three games, then Ty would be active the final three.”
ON HIS PHILOSOPHY IN TWO-FOR-ONE SITUATIONS:
“Well, I think in general most teams will say 33 seconds is kind of the point you want to take a shot. You can’t always time it up, but if there’s 50 (seconds) on the shot clock when you get the ball I’d rather wait. I’d rather run the clock down to the low 30s and ensure that you get the two-for-one. Whereas, if you get it with 35 and you’re in transition, a pull-up-three for a good shooter is a good shot, but ideally you get a layup in transition. You push the ball looking for a layup or a great shot. There have definitely been times this year where we’ve taken bad pull-up-threes in transition, and so I think it’s something we’ve discussed as a team is two-for-ones should mean let’s get two good looks, not just let’s just launch.”
