11Weird game with weird enemies, but in a cool way-- er, "Radical" way! Your titular spiky-haired ninja hero swings his "spinning sword" at his enemies, trying to ultimately reach his girlfriend Princess Margo who has been turned to stone by the evil Stone Wizard. Each of the 8 rounds are set in a rather colorful, unique land, and a number at the bottom of the screen tells you how close you are to the end, where you will face a (very weird) boss. Some opportunities to get a special power up will occur a few times during the game-- you can get a flying extension of your sword to take out enemies at a distance, or you can get a lame "shield" which is a very slow-moving orb that spins around you, and will kill enemies it touches (but again, it moves very slow). The weird bosses include the hydrocephalic Death Breath (who drives you backward with his breath or tries to squash you with his head (I'm NOT kidding!); Spike, who swings a spiked mace and throws a blade at you; the Horned Witch who splits into multiple forms and can shoot arrows at you if a form is left unattended; the Green Grub which must have all its body segments destroyed and then its head must be struck multiple times; the Mad Monk who attacks you with word balloons (!); the Samurai Guard with his spear (he's actually really easy if you can draw out his attack then strike his head); and lastly the Stone Wizard who you must face twice, and he has multiple forms the second time around. Something about the colorful, weird and funny enemies in this game really appeals to me (often I find that sort of thing off-putting) and makes what could have been an ordinary scrolling adventure much more interesting. The NES port is really well done and has a plethora of secret areas. Thanks for watching and have a great MLK Weekend!
