Unfortunately, the first prize was given to the same woman who had won the contest for the last five years in a row. The young man quickly learned that all the other contestants suspected she'd been bribing one of the judges. There was no proof of this, but the young man couldn't take that news. Furious to think that his father might not get the treatment he deserved because of the selfish woman, he decided to take what he thought was owed him.

That night, he went to the woman's house and set fire to the woman's garden and waited. Eventually, she came rushing out into her backyard in shock. When she did, the young man dropped from the brick wall that surrounded the backyard and slipped into her house, locking the door behind him. He searched the house until he found the money he needed, and then rushed out the front door without giving the woman a second thought.

Early the next morning, the young man walked to the doctor's office to buy the medicine for his father, but to his shock, the police were waiting for him. The woman from the previous night had been unable to escape her own backyard after he locked the door, and the fire had spread from her garden. The fire department had arrived too late to save her, and she had suffered severe burns all over her body.

Panicking, the young man fled the doctor's office and ran for his farm, the police following closely behind him. As they tore through the fields towards his house, the man's mind was racing. Was there any way he could hide the money, or perhaps leave it to his family without anyone discovering where it came from? Would they still let him buy the medicine he needed to? No, surely they would seize the money. After all, the woman was now in desperate need of medical attention, just like his father.

As he emerged from the fields and ran towards his house, the young man realized that there was no way out of this for him. In a moment of desperation, stupidity, and fear, he snatched up a nearby scythe, one of the tools he hadn't picked up since his father had taken ill. One of the police officers chasing the young man panicked and drew his weapon, firing two shots. Both missed their mark, and sailed towards the house. They shattered a window and flew through the kitchen, before one finally found its destination: the gas line running to the oven.

An explosion knocked the young man and the police officers to the ground. The house suddenly went up in flames, its walls splintering and glass showering the front lawn. Horrified, the young man jumped back to his feat and ran towards the house, his scythe still in hand. But he already knew there was nothing he could do. His father, and the rest of his family, had all been claimed by the blast.

The heat was so intense that he couldn't get close to the house. He just stood there, watching the flames climbing higher and higher into the air, and the embers sailing away from the house. Within minutes, the dry and neglected fields would catch fire as well.

The police officers slowly got back on their feet, and looked towards the house. They saw the man, his back to them, staring into the destroyed house. The flaming petals of his roses whipped about in the air around him.

Then the young man turned to the officers, his eyes narrowed. His grip on the scythe tightened. Behind the officers, the fields were beginning to catch fire. There was nowhere for them to run.

And that was how the young man, Axel, became so obsessed with fire.
