The new trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes drops a couple of hints that Freya Allan is playing an astronaut like Charlton Heston in the original movie, which could be setting up a repeat of that film’s iconic twist. Set nearly 300 years after Caesar’s story ended in War for the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sees an advanced ape civilization, led by ruthless dictator Proximus Caesar, attempting to enslave the feral remnants of humanity. The trailer suggests this is the closest that the reboots have gotten to the original story.
Helmed by Wes Ball, the director of the Maze Runner trilogy, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set to arrive in theaters on May 10. With the promise of spectacular set-pieces and another moving story of humans and apes teaming up, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is primed to be one of the biggest blockbuster hits of the summer. The trailer teases that Freya Allan’s Mae is different from the other human characters, and it could be setting up a new spin on the familiar plot twist from the classic original Planet of the Apes movie.
The evidence that Allan is playing a displaced astronaut in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is scarce, but the hints are there. She’s wearing different clothes than all the other humans, which makes her look a lot less primitive in that regard. Whereas all the other humans are wearing makeshift outfits made out of rags, Mae is wearing a modern tank top and pants. There’s a shot in the trailer that shows a dilapidated observatory in the film’s post-apocalyptic environment. Mae wanders through the ruins of the observatory and gazes at a telescope, which plant life has grown over. This shot could mean a few things. It could hint at humanity’s interest in space travel all these years into the future; it could hint that astronauts will soon arrive on Earth; or it could hint that Mae herself is an astronaut who slipped through a time vortex and wound up on the ape-infested Earth of the future. Either way, an astronaut story is likely.
If this theory is true and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes revolves around bewildered astronauts returning to Earth to find it overrun with talking apes, then Allan’s character could be a replacement for Charlton Heston’s original protagonist, George Taylor. In the original Planet of the Apes, Taylor mysteriously traveled through time and landed on what seemed to be an alien planet filled with apes on horseback who had enslaved the remaining humanoids. In the final scene, he was shocked to find that the planet he landed on was a dystopian Earth when he saw the Statue of Liberty.
In Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ version of this story, Mae would be the main astronaut who traveled through time and arrived back on an unfamiliar futuristic Earth. If that’s the case, then she’s the character that the audience would follow through all the sequels in this new Planet of the Apes series. That would make sense, given how much importance the trailers have placed on Allan’s character. After the last Planet of the Apes reboot series focused on the ape character of Caesar, it would shake things up to focus on a human character in this one.
If Mae really is an astronaut who lands on a futuristic Earth full of articulate apes, then it could mean huge things for the Planet of the Apes franchise’s next installments. This would officially end the prequel run that began with Rise of the Planet of the Apes and return to the original storyline of human conflicts with apes in the distant future. It would set up Mae as the protagonist of the series going forward, and it would allow the sequels to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes to do their own take on the original series’ premise.
It would have a big impact on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ own story, too, because the arrival of new humans with advanced technology would throw a spanner into the works of Proximus Caesar’s plan. The trailer revealed that Proximus Caesar wants to seize all remaining human technology and enslave all remaining humans. The surviving humans are easy enough to round up, because they’ve regressed to a feral, primitive state. But if new humans arrive from space with a high-tech spaceship at their disposal, then the humans could have a fighting chance against Proximus Caesar’s reign of terror.
