King's Quest I: Quest for the Crown (1983, 1987) - DOS Game Review - GeorgGreat
This is a Spoiler-free, in-depth look at the original King’s Quest and the noble subgenre of the Graphic Adventure Games with a Text-Insert Interface. Once again, I examine the DOS version, as it is by far the most accessible one to the audiences, and therefore the most relevant one.
In this video I would advise you to pay special attention to the analysis of the difference between the Text-insert and the Point ‘n’ Click interfaces – it is fascinating to see how a simple choice of the user interface can have such a profound and fundamental effect on a game. Also this will come in handy in the future episodes.
The game itself was interesting to review – it has many ideas that are truly brilliant and which, for some reason, were never picked up by other developers – and even if they were, they were never as bold in their ambition as in this game. It’s a shame really; even the sequel has only the shadow of the uncompromising gameplay freedom that the original game provided.
