PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT:
Klay, what's it feel like to win one of these games?
“…doesn't mean much if we don't go up to Portland tomorrow and take care of business, so, but it does feel good to kind of lift a lid off this losing streak and try to start a new streak that culminates in wins.”
Klay, who had more rookie confidence, you or Brandin Podziemski?
“…probably one of his best attributes, honestly, is his belief in himself. I saw that this past summer… I'm shooting the same shots I do, did as a rookie… that's a wash.”
What was it like tonight watching him go to work?
“He willed us to victory… Make shots from all the floor at the rim and the mid range from 35 ft is something probably will never see again in the league, so. I'm grateful for Steph’s performance tonight. It really put us over the edge. 54 the last two games. Oh wow. It's hard. Hopefully keep that up.”
Is the shot feeling better?
“It was great. Tonight I had like four open looks, though, and I forced a few shots. So I still have another level to get to…”
How conscious are you, I mean, of not having too much burden on Steph?
“I'd say the last three or four I shot well, so it's a good trend, but yeah, strength in numbers. It's pretty self explanatory…”
And how do you sort of generally feel about the new look starting unit?
“They both do things different, but very well. Jk is one of the best athletes in the NBA. BP showing his completeness to his game. I mean, his ability to rebound, hit threes, floaters. Very uncanny for a rookie… And, I mean, I feel for Wiggs… huge days coming… I just know him too well to ever lose doubt in my guy Wiggs… Heads up. Oh, that's a good plane right there.”
Brandin, how would you describe sort of the vibe when stuff gets going the way he did in the fourth and being out there with him when that happens?
“…just get out of his way and just let him do his thing. down the stretch when he gets it going, we try to bring in the weakest defender from their team and give him a switch.”
Did you feel almost like an increased level of focus and emotion from him tonight to kind of get you guys this one?
“…Obviously he was out there right after I walked through today, just locked in and focused on, just winning and, obviously that was showing in his play tonight… we're recognizing that it's super hard to win the NBA and we got to bring it every night…”
How important do you think maybe defending without fouling tonight was?
“…I know some of its effort and hustle and energy, but also Steve.”
Is it a court sense or something that's developed or just have you always had it?
“…when you're not as athletic as maybe like a Jonathan Kuminga, you have to kind of rely on your positioning to sort of overlook those deficiencies...”
It seems like your learning curve, though, has not been super-steep as a rookie. Is that something that just the game is still?
“…I feel like I'm a quick learner… maybe that's my God-given gift, not athleticism...”
How has the new starting lineup felt for you?
“I think it's felt good. it's kind of given us a different dynamic, especially like when Chris comes in for me, maybe six or five minute mark…”
Have the younger guys talked about kind of just how does it feel to have that a little bit more on your shoulders and that responsibility?
“I love it. Obviously this has been a veteran-oriented team for sure, eight, nine years now But like Steph had mentioned in LA in his postgame interview, maybe it is time for some younger guys to help…”
You hit four threes tonight. Is the shot feeling better? How much do you want that last one back?
“I want the last one back for sure; it felt good, but like I said, after summer league, I knew I would bounce back. It was just a little bit of an adjustment, but just being around Steph and Klay, kind of having that mindset of if I'm open, I'm going to shoot...”
Brandin, what would you say is the key to playing effectively with Steph?
“Yeah, I think it's kind of understanding space. If you see him, you screen for him. It's kind of just something I think about. Gary Payton is probably the best at it. So I try to ask Gary like what he does to him…”
