"Kong: Skull Island" (2017) directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts is a really solid MonsterVerse film that is worth your time and money. Unlike many Godzilla & King Kong films, this one does not hold back in it's CGI and is not attempting to save budget by hiding / limiting anything.

The American government discover a secluded island protected by some sort of EMP force field which has hidden it from the world until now. They send a team of people including elite tracker James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston), military man Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson), and photographer Mason Weaver (Brie Larson) to scout out the island. They discover the island is being guarded by an enormous powerful ape called King Kong. The team encounter local natives including a forgotten Vietnam soldier named Hank Marlow (John C. Reilly) who informs them that Kong is not their enemy and in fact it is these skull-bearing lizard creatures which live under the island's surface; which have now been awakened by the arriving humans' bombs.

Kong: Skull Island is an extremely well made entertaining popcorn film. This is practically as good as it possibly gets in this particular genre. The action and visuals are of the highest quality and the film even bothers to flesh out it's universe here with fascinating creature designs and a lot more to get excited about than just King Kong himself. In my opinion this is the best MonsterVerse film of all of the ones currently released.

Just like every other film in this genre and series though the human characters obviously suck. Now they suck a little less than other ones and it's not like I would want a ton of time devoted to them anyways. The other issue I had was the conflicted tone, sometimes the film desperately wanted to be R rated with it's language and violence, but other times it's featuring cheesy dialogue, failed comedy attempts, and holding back in the brutality department. There is obviously no "theme" or "message" here, but this is one of those things where it doesn't require it to be rated highly in my books.

Skull Island is surprisingly amazing if we're being honest. I know you're probably tempted to hate on it just by looking at it, but sit yourself down a time or two and watch it and you will be very satisfied.
