Dofus1 (pronounced /do.fus/ or /do.fys/2) is a French massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Ankama then by its subsidiary Ankama Games upon its creation in 2004.

A project started by Emmanuel Darras, Camille Chafer and Anthony Roux, its very first version – which only offered player versus player – was entitled Arty Slot: Duel and was the fourth opus in the Arty Slot3 series. One thing led to another and the developers improved the game, reaching a beta testing phase and changing the name of the game to Dofus. After a few months, Dofus was released on September 1, 2004 in France. A version 2.0 was released in 2009, with new graphics.

It is the precursor of a universe created by Ankama, the Krosmoz, in which Wakfu, its sequel released in 2012, an animated series of the same name, a film called Dofus, book 1: Julith, as well as several comics, animations and video games.

After its lasting success in the late 2000s and early 2010, Dofus is losing momentum. The team therefore chooses to merge some of its servers to bring the community together. The game's population has since been rather stable, on an increasing slope with numerous peaks corresponding to major events or update releases4.

In addition to its PC version for Mac, Linux and Windows, Ankama released a Mobile version in 20165 entitled “Dofus Touch”. Based on an earlier version of the game, the port has since diverged significantly in terms of its updates, although much of the content is shared.

To celebrate the game's 15th anniversary, Dofus Retro was launched on version 1.29 of the game on September 24, 20196. The Retro servers have since been maintained, with some ergonomic updates.

On Wednesday September 30, 2020, to celebrate the first anniversary of the Dofus Rétro servers, new specifically “single account” servers are open7. This opening had been announced a month earlier at the same time as the arrival of content planned at the time but since canceled on the Dofus Rétro8 servers.
