Sonic the Hedgehog is an educational video game developed by Realtime Associates and published by LeapFrog Enterprises. It was released in North America on July 7, 2008 as a launch title for the LeapFrog Didj learning system.

Plot
Dr. Eggman has once again stolen the Chaos Emeralds, and it is up to Sonic the Hedgehog to get them back.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a 2D side-scroller platforming video game, which plays similar to past 2D Sonic games. The player takes control of Sonic the Hedgehog, who can run and jump as his most basic abilities. The game is divided into four Zones, each with two Acts, with a boss fight at the end of the second one.

As with past Sonic games, Rings are scattered across the Acts. Rings work as the player's method of protection; if the player is hit while having at least one Ring, they will survive at the cost of losing all Rings, though they will be given a short amount of time to collect them. However, if the playable character gets hurt without having any Rings on them, they will lose a life, or get a Game Over if they run out of lives.

Badges and Bitz
During the game, the player will be able to earn various achievements called Badges, which are part of the Didj reward system. each Badge will award the player with a certain number of points called Bitz, depending on the value of the achievement.

Badges are displayed on the player’s Achievement Screen from the game's menu and are stored (alongside the Bitz) on the LeapFrog website.

The game's logo is derived from the logo of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
This marks the second Sonic game on a LeapFrog learning system, the first being Sonic X. Sonic X focuses on mathematics, while Sonic the Hedgehog focuses on spelling.
The game uses the sprites of Sonic from Sonic 3 & Knuckles, although his color palette is from Sonic Spinball.
Despite its name, Green Hill Zone uses sprites from Emerald Hill Zone.
All the music from this game are remixes of music from Sonic 3 & Knuckles:
The title music, as well as the theme for Grass Hill is the theme for Mushroom Hill Zone Act 1 from Sonic & Knuckles.
A sped-up version is used when Sonic collects the Power Sneakers in any stage.
Another remix was also available for download.
The real title music is in the game's files and is the same title music from Sonic & Knuckles.
The theme for the main menu and the credits is the same music used for the ending theme of Sonic 3D Blast on the Sega Genesis.
The theme for Hydropolis (which is Sandopolis Zone and Hydrocity Zone) is the theme for Sandopolis Zone, Act 1 from Sonic & Knuckles.
Another remix was also available for download.
The theme for Scrap Plant (which is Scrap Brain Zone and Chemical Plant Zone) is the theme for Flying Battery Zone, Act 1 from Sonic & Knuckles.
Another remix was also available for download.
The invincibility theme is the same invincibility theme from Sonic & Knuckles.
The music for clearing a level is the same act clear music from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
The Slot Machine music from Sonic & Knuckles can be heard during the Word Wheel minigame.
The Blue Sphere theme from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 can be heard during the cannon minigame.
The Act 1 mini-boss theme from Sonic & Knuckles can be heard in Egg Base Zone, as well as during a boss.
The Game Over theme from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 can be heard when the player loses all their lives.
