A massively multiplayer online game (MMOG or more commonly MMO) is an online video game with many players on the same server. MMOs usually feature a huge, persistent open world, although some games differ. These games can be found on most network-capable platforms, including personal computers, video game consoles, smartphones, and other mobile devices.
MMOs can enable players to cooperate and compete with each other on a large scale, and sometimes to interact meaningfully with people around the world. They include a variety of gameplay types, representing many video game genres.
MUD was created in 1978 by Roy Trubshaw and Richard Bartle at the University of Essex on a DEC PDP-10. Trubshaw named the game Multi-User Dungeon, in tribute to the Dungeon variant of Zork, which Trubshaw had greatly enjoyed playing. Zork in turn was inspired by an older text-adventure game known as Colossal Cave Adventure or ADVENT.
