Let's Do Over the First Part of the realMYST LP (Myst Island)
82This video demonstrates how my first LP might have looked like had I made the series in 2013. It covers the original Parts 1-6, which is how long my first recording of the original version lasted. I will not be redoing any more videos after this.
I'm not saying I don't like the original videos. However, I do consider them my weakest performance (that's good because that means I improved, right?) and whenever I watch them, I can't help but think about how I would do them differently. So I decided to put that issue to rest. On an academic level, I believe that the new version is superior, though I admit there's also a nostalgia bias that favors the original version.
The main thing I went for in this version was a more consistent approach of someone that hasn't played the game before. Too often in the original I pretended to see something for the first time, then immediately explained in detail how it was portrayed in the original. Today I would handle this by relegating such information to video descriptions.
While I don't necessarily want anyone to consider this video as a "replacement" of the old videos, I still made sure I left all the puzzles exactly as I did in those videos, so you can go from here to Part 7 of the original series and maintain a mostly consistent experience (but not entirely since the some of the commentary has changed). I left some of the old jokes intact but replaced other bits as I saw fit.
Another difference you'll quickly see is that the aspect ratio of this video is 4:3 instead of 16:9. Apparently this is how it's supposed to be, though it looks strange to me since whenever I load the game, the display always spreads across my widescreen monitor no matter what resolution I set it to.
The deciding factor in motivating me to make this video was that I haven't posted anything in a long time, so I wanted to post a long video but one that would take a relatively short time to make. That only sorta worked out. You'll notice the date I put in the planetarium is awhile ago already. That's because I didn't have time to work on anything at all for a few weeks. Oh well.
