Let's Mosey: A Slow Translation Of Final Fantasy VII: Part Eleven-Two
Finally: the finale.
Tim Rogers spent 800 hours over the course of two years replaying Final Fantasy VII sixteen times in both English and Japanese. This eleven-part series excavates, examines, and explains dozens of tiny nuanced differences between the game's first English translation and its original Japanese script.
This series does not aim to "retranslate" or provide a "better" translation of Final Fantasy VII. It aims merely to loan the viewer the personal perspective of a person possessing fluent proficiency in the Japanese language. Japanese accomplishes marvelous depth in relatively fewer characters than English. One example from this series shows a four-letter Japanese phrase that expands to 70 characters in English. Therefore this series seeks to expand the game's dialogue and let it blossom into English that its original translator could technologically not have fit into the English version in 1997.
By the end of this series, even the most unacquainted of newcoming language learners should own enough of a grasp of the mechanics of Japanese grammar to appreciate the climax.
