The plot is set in a fictional history of real-world events and follows the centuries-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The framing story is set in the 21st century and features the series protagonist Desmond Miles who, with the aid of a machine known as the Animus, relives the memories of his Assassin ancestors to find a way to avert the 2012 apocalypse. The main story follows Ezio Auditore da Firenze (the protagonist of Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood) in 16th century Constantinople as he attempts to unlock the secret vault of Altaïr Ibn-LaʼAhad (the protagonist of the first game) using disc-like artifacts containing the latter's memories. Altaïr is also playable in flashback sequences set in 12th and 13th century Masyaf.
Revelations features an open world and is played from the third-person perspective, with a primary focus on using Desmond's, Ezio's and Altaïr's combat, climbing and stealth abilities to eliminate targets and explore the environment. Ezio, who the player controls throughout the majority of the game, is free to explore Constantinople to complete side missions unrelated to the main storyline.
