1Crystal Souls: Now we know! Crystal Souls are the souls of the elder and much venerated Vahnatai that have transformed into crystal. We have encountered some in the ruins and they communicated with us. Of course there is more to learn about them. Apparently, some murderous, thieving scoundrels from the human race stole a bunch of these priceless, living relics and left a bloody trail. The Vahnatai are broken up into factions and their race possess very powerful and superior magic that some factions want to unleash on the human race of Avernum as revenge for this crime. It is our mission to redeem our race to prevent that; we must show them that, yes, there are a few bad apples, but as a whole we are good people; please don't holocaust our asses. Wish me luck!
Note: There is a faction of Vahnatai that disregard the Crystal Souls and we have been hired to infiltrate them and kill their leader. So much for the Vahnatai being an enlightened race without infighting and thirst for vengeance.

Avernum is an underground kingdom where the surface empire sends its undesirables and political prisoners. If you speak out against the empire, they are likely to send you to Avernum to live out the rest of your days. Life underground is very different from the surface world. Those who have lived in Avernum for a while lose their skin pigmentation and look very pale and unhealthy. Food and drink are made from a mushroom that grows very well underground, a "magic mushroom" that was created by magic-users who were exiled to Avernum.
In Avernum 1: Escape from the Pit, my party of high powered human beings did escape, slay powerful demons and ultimately kill the mad emperor of the surface world. But, sadly, did not survive the last confrontation and could not return to Avernum. There is a way to return if you satisfy certain conditions, which we did not.
After the death of their leader, in Avernum 2, the Empire seeks revenge against the Avernites and sends hundreds of soldiers underground to slaughter and pillage. Despite the great number of empire troops, the forces of Avernum, using their underground knowledge to their advantage, fend off the empire and, as we enter Avernum 2, there is a stalemate between the two forces.
We start out as lowly underground diggers who are soon recruited after we display our fighting skills against the least of the empire's forces and other enemies, to help Avernum against the empire. Wish me luck.
