A History Of Violence Meaning
Ok so A History of violence typically refers to three things when it's used.
The David Croenberg film of the same name very much dealt with past and how it's almost impossible to escape it.
When discussing what he implied in the title he stated that the three things it it refers to are:
A person living with a long history of violence, the historical used of violence as settling a means of disputes and the rules of Darwinian evolution in which better adapted organisms replace those less able to cope.
I think it's usage in the episode itself very much refers to the history of violence that black people have been subjected to over the centuries. When discussing the topic with my friends they said that they very much feel that in being black they are born into an almost unspoken uneasiness due to what their people have gone through and this generational pain, though not on the surface is always there in the back of their minds.
This history of pain is very much reflected in the characters throughout the episode, namely Montrose and we open with him suffering from PTSD over what he's been through. In the entry he remarks on a rope technique that was passed down through his family and we very much get the idea that there is an ancestoral pain moving through the generations.
Though it hasn't been expressly put across in the show beyond a few minor glimpses, the book details a lot of the conflict that he and Atticus had and it's clear that he used to beat him really badly. The character has had to deal with the fact that his brother is dead, his dead wife cheated on him with his brother and that Atticus may not even be his own son.
It's a lot to process and he also unearths his family's ties to the order of ancient dawn.
We learn that George gave him this book before he died and you may remember that we spotted this in our episode 2 breakdown. It actually has a lot of bearing on this entry and Montrose burns it, stating that it smells like Tulsa.
It's something that was a key plot point in Watchmen and this history of violence in pain is still so strong in Montroses' memory that even the burning of this book brings it all flooding back.
In the book he finds a passage about why the monsters were created and it's clear that Ancient Dawn view Eve as being the reason for this even though Adam was the bad one. We saw this in a stain glass window in which there was distressed eve and Adam with a snake for his junk.
Adam was clearly the bad one with Eve being the victim. They still worship him though and this mirrors how they feel about over races.
There's also mention of a time machine in the episode and though it isn't said directly, it does show how the past very much can be linked to the future in several ways. I'm not sure if it'll be brought up again down the line and it is possible that changing the past could be used as a way to save George. George was a very big facet of the book but his death has completely changed the show's direction and because of this we really don't know what they're gonna do with the characters.
