Scientist Reed Richards (John Krasinski) persuades his arrogant former classmate, Victor von Doom (Matthew McConaughey), to fund his experiments with cosmic energy. On von Doom's space station, the crew -- including astronaut Ben Grimm (David Harbour), researcher Sue Storm (Emily Blunt) and pilot Johnny Storm (Ansel Elgort) -- are exposed to a mysterious cosmic storm that bestows super powers upon them. As they cope with their transformations, von Doom vows his revenge.

It's easy to fixate on Avengers: Infinity War as the biggest thing happening to the MCU right now, and while the movie is indeed a colossal event, we can't forget about the future. The MCU may have some serious changes in store post-Avengers 4 and not just for the characters that will be leaving, but also for the ones who will be joining. The Disney/Fox deal means that the Fantastic Four and the X-Men in the MCU are a real possibility for the first time in... well, ever. How this would affect the still very successful X-Men franchise is unknown, but the Fantastic Four aren't in that boat and Marvel might already be taking steps to prep audiences for an MCU-ized Fantastic Four.
Even before rumors about Disney’s acquisition of Fox were common knowledge, it seemed like placing the FF in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was the natural next step after audiences rejected the previous live-action Fantastic Four movie. Sony and Marvel’s deal did a lot to revitalize Spider-Man, and the FF could surely use the help as well.
Marvel’s Kevin Feige has said several times that the next batch of films are going “cosmic.” Having the Fantastic Four back means the entire Marvel cosmos is fair game, from the Silver Surfer, Galactus, Annihilus, and more. There’s so much story potential to mine from the #Fantastic4 that the X-Men could conceivably skip Phase 4 altogether before becoming the focus of Phase 5 a few years later. Aside from Deadpool, the X-Men could probably use a rest before getting a MCU reboot.
If there is one set of comic book characters who have never gotten their due on screen, it's the Fantastic Four, with its movies ranging from bad to worse so far. But fans haven't given up on Marvel's First Family, and as the cinematic portrayals of the Hulk, Spider-Man and the Punisher have shown, if you keep plugging away at characters and trying new things, eventually you can get it right. A big part of getting the Fantastic Four right is casting, and recently fans have been calling for real life couple John Krasinski and Emily Blunt to take on Reed Richards and Sue Storm, respectively.
While this is all speculation at this point, there are plenty of reasons to think we may be seeing Marvel's First Family back on the big screen sooner rather than later. It was just announced that a new Fantastic Four comic book series is coming from Marvel in August, the first since 2015. That makes me think that the game is afoot, and should the Disney purchase of 20th Century Fox go through, the Fantastic Four may be quickly brought into the MCU fold. Unlike the X-Men, the Fantastic Four could be easily integrated into the MCU without setting up some massive history of mutant civil rights. The MCU's Phase 4 just seems appropriate for the triumphant return of the Fantastic Four and a chance at finally getting them right, and bringing John Krasinski and Emily Blunt on board to star would be a solid start.
