Wright Thompson. Emmy winning sportswriter at ESPN. was on the other end of the line trying to remember one of the last times he had seen Jason Isbell live. Hes a fan of the game. Isbell is a sports fan first and foremost . Theres an element of the player recognition game at play here. He knows the score and can speak the language. I love all those little winks about sporting elements that are universal. said Van Valkenburg. Its not like hes about professional sports writes. He writes about the things that made us want to be storytellers. He uses sports to tell other kinds of stories. Authors can usually recognize good writing when they see it. And more importantly. they know the talent and effort it takes to create.Theres a beauty and romance and spirit in the pursuit thats inspiring. It reminds you of why you do what you do. Wickersham said. Sports may be a zero sum game. but writing isnt. and you are your competition. Thompson is more sober. I just thank God Jason can play the guitar and didnt choose to be a sportswriter because wed all be out of work. he said. Hes a real sports fan. Hes a funny guy. Theres not really a big point to make here. The guy is hilarious. people like to laugh. Sports journalists are people. Its as simple as that.
