I lied and did some more work.

First, I whacked my head against the keyboard a couple of times, and after blacking out, I woke up to a pretty okay-looking cel shader. It supports transparent textures, though it can only render either a completely opaque or a completely transparent pixel.

After that, I started working on Heaven Smiles. I rigged their model to the Max 2 skeleton and made two animations, idle and walking. Currently they lack the animations and programming to handle damage and attacking.

Smiles are "invisible" on spawn, laugh on activation and walk slowly towards you. Scanning, which can only be done while aiming, makes them fully visible.
