Compatibility mode
Right click on the executable go to properties "Compatibility" tab "Run this program in compatibility mode"

Steam
Right click game in Steam Library - select 'properties\ local files \ verify game cache' and check for updated game file

Try is going inside your steam folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Medieval II Total War copy medieval2.exe and renamed it to kingdoms.exe

Useful for launching mods or the kingdoms expansions drop in your Medieval II folder and run the executable.
