Metroid Prime (GC) - Korean Save File Corruptions - Ruins Entryway & Ice Ruins West (KR)
1There's a version of Metroid Prime out there that when you play it and use a memory card that has an NTSC version save of Metroid Prime 1 on it, strange things happen to the Korean version of the game. These are videos of the Korean version of Metroid Prime, which has the unique release code of DOL-GM8E-0-30 USA.
What makes this particular version so interesting is that the korean version mis-reads all of the save data of a US save-file and starts to mess around with the rooms in the Korean version of the game.
The Korean version uses up the same number of blocks as the NTSC (american) version (1 block), however, the Korean version saves the game much faster than the US version.
This is what causes the data to become corrupt, as the game seems to 'speed read' the NTSC save data, without realising it's not the save data it should be using.
If you play the Korean version on a memory card without an NTSC save, it'll play perfectly fine.
The Metroid Prime save files store the room layouts, enemy locations, and all relevant event triggers for each room. Room changes are set off when various triggers are activated.
The Korean version seems to not only try and load ALL possible room states simultaneously, but it can also stick enemies in rooms where there never where any, or even remove enemies entirely from rooms that had them!
It messes the game up so badly that when you reach the forcefield in the Phazon Mines, on the way to the Omega Pirate, the red scanning area for opening the forcefield is missing and you're now unable to finish the game!
Once you've corrupted the save file, that save file is corrupted permanently, and you must start a brand new save file that is uncorrupted.
It makes sense that Retro would miss this. Why would you check on someone playing the super-limited Korean version of Metroid Prime on a memory card that also has an NTSC Metroid Prime save file on it?
