I decided to walk the road. The road to S-rank. Visiting virtual reality is part of that road. And my does it feel rewarding.

So yeah, been playing Metal Gear Rising as of late, got back into it just recently after simple temptation for mastering it. Bought the Jetstream DLC (because he was not made free in European regions!) and cleared it once and was left with a really good feeling, definitely worth the download.

But this VR mission? It certainly did not feel good for the most part. Four sets of enemies, three of which are quite easy to deal with. It should be noted that this mission is set to Revengeance difficulty level which means one-shot kills from just about anything and everything and the extremely powerful parry counter -which will obviously play an important part in this VR mission-.

So what makes this VR mission so difficult then? The Gekko in the first wave has a tendency to charge at Raiden which means free execution as soon as the mission starts, the Mastiffs can be parry countered as long as you can react to their parryable moves (for me the wall jump leap was the easiest to counter) and the GRAD in the fourth wave is a joke thanks to Sai.

It's the third wave's railgun Fenrir. The Piggyback's strategy guide for the game recommends to stay close to the Fenrir at all times but I think it leaves the player exposed to everything else in the field which you cannot afford for. The berserker cyborgs may be slow for the most part but they can still catch up on Raiden a bit too quickly for my liking so a patient approach to eliminating Fenrir with a charged up Sai attack is a good way to go about this wave. Just make sure you don't pull yourself to the center of the enemy wave or there will be atrocity. It is advised to go for a parry counter against the Fenrir but the 10-minute time limit for the gold rank is overly generous for this kind of play so feel free to chip Fenrir to death with a Sai pull and a quick light attack combo.

Yes, this kind of approach means you might end up eating the railgun shots which are incredibly difficult to avoid. The good thing is they are easily telegraphed but if the enemy positioning won't favor you when you would use Sai, well... it won't help much if you get pummeled right after it.

Once the Fenrir is out of the picture though, it becomes a whole lot easier. Equip the Pole-Arm and chip away at the remaining Tripods on the field while making sure you are out of the berserkers' range. As soon as the Tripods are finished, a single charged Pincer Blade slash WILL work for the remaining cyborgs, just make sure you hit both of them and / or they are not charging an attack themselves.

This was only my second attempt with the Pincer Blade approach because the first time I got to this part and tried it, the berserkers stopped caring about my charged combos so I had to reconsider it over the course of failing in subsequent attempts without it.

Three more Tripods will surface once the third wave has been taken care of. If you missed a Zandatsu refill, it's not a big loss considering the GRAD is arguably the easiest part of this mission.

I'm talking about the Sai loops, of course. It was dominant in R-02 on Revengeance and it continues to work like that here. A single charged Sai pull will keep GRAD stunned for at least five seconds and it's recovery from the stun gives you just enough time for another charge. Simply put, connect the charged Sai attack, mash the hell out of light attack and do the charged Sai attack again as soon as it's up. Repeat. If you are going for fast times this part of the mission won't serve that purpose all that well. Unless you were born a ninja cyborg in the first place.

All in all this mission took me about two hours to clear once and as mentioned earlier, the 10-minute cap for the gold rank is so much time, you could be jerking off for a good minute and still earn gold. That said, leaving parry counter out of the picture makes this even more of a daunting task to clear than it is already, because there will be much more exposal to potential OHKOs.

Have a good weekend and enjoy the video!
