"Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor" is an action-adventure game set in J.R.R. Tolkien's world, between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It follows Talion, a ranger of Gondor, and his quest for vengeance against the forces of Sauron. Here is the full plot summary:
Prologue
The game begins on the Black Gate of Mordor, where Talion serves as a ranger. His garrison is overrun by Sauron's forces, led by the Black Captains: the Hammer of Sauron, the Tower of Sauron, and the Black Hand of Sauron. In a brutal ritual, Talion, his wife Ioreth, and his son Dirhael are sacrificed by the Black Hand to summon the wraith of an Elven lord. However, the ritual goes awry, and the wraith merges with Talion, resurrecting him.
The Wraith and Talion's Quest
Now cursed with immortality and bound to the wraith, Talion cannot die until he completes his vengeance. The wraith, who has lost his memory, reveals that he is Celebrimbor, the legendary Elven smith who forged the Rings of Power. Talion and Celebrimbor form a partnership: Talion seeks to avenge his family, while Celebrimbor seeks to discover the truth about his past and thwart Sauron's plans.
Sauron's Army and the Nemesis System
Talion ventures into Mordor, systematically dismantling Sauron's army. Using Celebrimbor's powers, he can dominate orcs, turning them against each other. Talion interrogates and kills high-ranking Uruk leaders to learn more about Sauron's plans and the Black Captains.
Discovering Celebrimbor's Past
Through a series of flashbacks, Celebrimbor recalls his history:
He was tricked by Sauron, disguised as Annatar, into forging the Rings of Power.
When Celebrimbor discovered Sauron's betrayal, he forged the Three Elven Rings in secret and attempted to defy Sauron by stealing the One Ring.
Sauron retaliated, killing Celebrimbor's family and enslaving him. The wraith was ultimately bound to the One Ring, which Sauron used to dominate Middle-earth.
Confronting the Black Captains
Talion eliminates the Hammer and the Tower, two of the Black Captains, in epic battles. Along the way, he allies with notable characters, including:
Hirgon, a Gondorian who helps him ignite a rebellion against the Uruks.
Lithariel, a warrior from Núrn who aids in freeing slaves.
Gollum, who helps Celebrimbor recover lost memories, motivated by his obsession with the One Ring.
The Black Hand of Sauron
The final confrontation occurs with the Black Hand. Talion infiltrates the fortress of Durthang, where the Black Hand attempts to sacrifice himself to bind Celebrimbor to Sauron. However, Celebrimbor resists, and Talion kills the Black Hand. Despite achieving revenge, Talion realizes Sauron's power remains unbroken.
Ending and Sequel Setup
Celebrimbor urges Talion to pass on to the afterlife, but Talion refuses, declaring his intent to forge a new path and oppose Sauron directly. This leads into the events of the sequel, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, where Talion continues his fight against Sauron by creating his own Ring of Power.
