20Full Guide into doing NDB only approach (ie no DME allowed!) Come upfront with me in the A346 cockpit / X-Plane 12. La Rochelle's NDB Only Approach, Using Raw Data ONLY! In a modern A340-600 (that means a single needle and a stopwatch!)
Let's do this old style NDB approach using only RAW data, select headings manually. No LNAV No VNAV. NDB's are being ripped up away from airports all over the world, so now's the time to get some more NDB approaches in before they go entirely.
As NDB beacons get removed physically from airports in the real world, so do the navigation charts get updated, and thus our simulators at home lose the beacons as a result. NDB's are a lot of fun, and certainly require more skill than just dropping the approach into the MCDU where airbus will auto-drop you out right in front of the piano keys like it was RNAV style approach.... yawn - yes we know.
Disconnect from the flight plan well before even arriving at the NDB - turn on the bird, erase the existing flight plan, switch the ND over to VOR only mode - and change the VOR switch to NDB only... Now're we're talking! Just 1 needle, and a navigation chat (set NOT to show aircraft icon) and the fun can begin.
Stopwatches at the ready! Did I mention - NO DME!
