Need For Speed is a series that’s been around longer than it’s own target audience has been alive. With twenty-two different entries in the series, all of them published by Electronic Arts, the series has covered nearly every single sub-genre of racing game: closed-track; open world; arcade; simulation; simcade; some of the games have even chosen to focus on a story-driven experience, while others throw a storyline away in favor of gameplay.

But in the middle of all this, Need For Speed is a series accused of losing it’s identity, and that may very well be the case. The future of the series is in jeopardy now more than ever, with rising criticism as well as the appearance of new competitors in the form of Forza Horizon from Microsoft, The Crew from Ubisoft, and Project CARS from Slightly Mad Studios.
