Somewhere around his sixth or seventh national title as a head coach, Nick Saban, the coach, became impossible to separate from Nick Saban, the idea, and those are two very different things: The sheer volume of uninterrupted success Saban has created in the volatile sport of college football has blinded both his critics and fans along the way. There's no arguing his record, but there are several misunderstandings about how he achieved it.

Saban created formula for program management he calls "The Process," and it's incredibly rigid and impossible to subvert. That explains his failures as an NFL head coach. But while "The Process" itself doesn't change, it creates an environment that can change and adapt to maintain success, a paradox even the smartest football people around have a hard time understanding.
