As we approach the extreme south of our planet, the white expanse of Antarctica is a sight to behold. A land of incredible beauty, rugged landscapes, and remarkable wildlife. And nestled within this frozen wilderness lies 'Novo', a private camp situated on a glacier 500m thick.

Access to 'Novo' is only possible during the summer months of November to February, when the temperature climbs to a balmy -10°C. The runway is the lifeline for this remote base and is cut into the ice, providing the necessary friction for aircraft to land safely. The grooves in the ice are carefully crafted to ensure the runway remains operational throughout the season. It's not just any runway, it's known as a 'Blue Ice' runway, due to the glacial ice being free of snow, making it a much smoother surface to land on.

At 3,000m long and 60m wide, the runway is marked out by black marker boards, acting as a beacon for pilots navigating through the blinding whiteness of Antarctica. The isolation of 'Novo' is extreme, and the logistical challenge of operating in such a remote location is immense. Every item that is required to sustain life at the camp has to be flown in, including food, fuel, and equipment. Waste is also flown out on the return leg!

Despite the challenges, 'Novo' is home to a small community of scientists, researchers, and explorers, who are dedicated to studying the frozen continent and uncovering its secrets. The camp is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including laboratories and living quarters, allowing the team to carry out their work in relative comfort.

'Novo' is a testament to the human spirit of exploration and discovery. It represents the culmination of years of planning, engineering, and sheer determination, as man continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in this most extreme and inhospitable of environments.
