If you are fan of the old classic adventure titles that we saw on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) then you will enjoy Occult Case Files. Stylized after classic PC to NES ports such as UnInvited, Déjà Vu, and Shadowgate, Occult Case Files is shaping up to be a great addition to the genre.

All about that interface

Occult Case Files uses an interface designed for both controllers and mouse/keyboard players. On screen buttons include commands such as “open”, “move”, “talk”, “take”, and (?) “pray” among others.

Interacting with the environment via the upper right window using those commands will get you through the game. In the upper left window is your inventory – use keys to open locks, etc.

The bottom left window features game specific things such as a calendar and clock.

Graphically Occult Case Files is very similar to the late 80’s graphic adventures. Slightly better than what we saw on the Nintendo Entertainment System but not so far that it is impossible to think this is an 8-bit title.

That story is where it is at

The story of Occult Case Files follows a location called “The Vanishing Point”. According to the Itch.io page, this is a place where a person can disappear into thin air.

You are an amateur occult investigator along with your friend. This is not your first case as a team, but it could be your last. Your goal is to investigate the happenings in this area and discover the truth.

The question is, will you survive?

Currently Occult Case Files is a work in progress and a demo is available. Worth checking out if you enjoy titles like Shadowgate, UnInvited, and Déjà Vu (on PC there is an official sequel).

Now excuse me while I go play some Occult Case Files and see more of this story.

Before you go, what is your favorite point and click adventure? I lean more towards horror and fantasy myself.
