Today, we honor and celebrate the life of Oliver Merivee. Oliver tragically fell to his death in the early morning of the 25th of December. He hit his head on a rock, whereafter he fell and died in the Lake he held so close to his heart and soul.
Oliver was a Brother, Lover, Healer, Leader, Visionary, and a source of inspiration to many of us. His story is one that many will find inspiring—starting with nothing, living with hardly any resources for most of his life—still finding the courage to travel the world even if this meant to be begging for food and water on Mexico's streets. His journey led him to Lake Atitlan, where he got called to share mushrooms' magic and create a space where people would feel welcome and safe.
Oliver's love for Sacred Mushrooms was known to many. They helped him become a more empathetic, caring, generous human being. He truly believed they have the power to change the world. To heal ourselves, and more importantly. To help us thrive. One of his foundational beliefs was that if your environment is thriving, you will thrive. He lived this belief by sharing the resources he had with the ones that truly needed them.
Oliver had never finished High School. Yet, learning was his true life passion. He was always learning about the things that inspired him most and as a teacher by hearth. He shared the things he learned with anybody that had a listening ear. When he finally found the courage and support to make teaching his livelihood. Oliver, Tannel, and Sylvan founded Fungi Academy in San Marcos la Laguna. Fungi Academy is his life project, a project that has changed so many lives. We are so eternally grateful for Oliver and his vital role in turning Fungi Academy in the phenomenon it is today. Although the road ahead is filled with many challenges. We will do everything in our power to continue building his dreams.
We will miss Oliver deeply for the rest of our lives. We are truly touched by all the support and love we have been receiving worldwide. If you have known Oliver, we invite you to share any stories or pictures you have of him with us.
