I often find myself drawn to games that are, as Yahtzee would say, "games that are blatantly another game and cannot be arsed to pretend otherwise." Project Wingman is Ace Combat. Temtem is Pokemon. Xenonauts is X-COM. Each one is a fascinating look at a franchise through a fan's eyes, and what those fans think is (or should be) that franchise's essence.

Paper Mario has always been a bit of a comfort game for me, but Nintendo decided to take the franchise in some... intriguing directions after the first two games. Enter Moonsprout Games and their 2019 game Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling. It's the first two Paper Mario games, just with insects instead of Mario and co.

But is it really?

Let's find out! Let's play through Paper Mario 64 and TTYD. Then let's play through Bug Fables and see if it holds up to its storied pedigree.
